Who Is Cody Nugent?
Cody was raised in Rodentown, a small community a few miles from Marshall County
just inside DeKalb County. At an early age his family had cattle, but transitioned to
poultry farming about the time he was 12. He spent his early teens working on the
family poultry farm, while attending school and church. He started working at the age of
16 in Boaz at the Nova 9 Cinemas. Soon after high school, he attended the college at
Gadsden State Community College and then the University of Alabama in Huntsville to
study accounting. He made the decision to leave this path, after a growing interest in
funeral service. He started his career in funeral service in 2009 where he started his
apprenticeship. He completed his Associates in Funeral Service Education from
Jefferson State Community College in 2013. Cody has served the citizens in Marshall
County in funeral service since 2011, helping families through their toughest times.
Cody was appointed in 2012 by Marlon Killion to serve as a Deputy Coroner. During his
time as a Deputy Coroner, his love of Marshall County grew as he served. In 2018, he
took his dedication to public service a step further and was elected as Marshall County
Coroner. During his time as Coroner, he has worked tirelessly to improve the office and
modernize many of the duties of the office. These include: electronic case management
systems, electronic cremation authorizations, digitalization of previous administration
records, first facility for the office, set training standards for the office, call center to
provide 24/7 access to the office for the public, established the first SOP, and many
other advancements.
Cody and his wife, Laina, made the decision that they wanted to raise their family in
Marshall County and moved to Albertville in 2012. He now resides in Boaz with his wife
and two kids. They attend Bridge Church in Boaz and he currently serves as a member
of the Beulah Volunteer Fire Department.
Service to Marshall County
Since 2018, Cody has served as the Marshall County Coroner. In this role, he has been trusted to provide calm, steady, and respectful leadership during the most difficult moments a family may face. His work has required accuracy, accountability, and a commitment to doing what is right — even when no one is watching.
As Coroner, Cody has earned a reputation for his dedication to the people of Marshall County and his ability to work closely and effectively with local agencies and community partners.
